Northside Festival DAY 3! (part 1)

So Friday was a slight let down, but we were determined to not let that stand in the way of a good time as we ended up hitting no less than 5 shows and seeing around a dozen bands playing everything from industrial pop to….whatever the hell The Señors of Marseille consider themselves to do.

Let’s break it down from the top.

Pop Tarts Suck Toasted Farewell Party / Showcase @ Glasslands.

First off, Glasslands was not as unbearably hot as we anticipated though it looks strange in daylight still. There weren’t a ton of people there, probably owning to the World Cup, but there were enough people there to get down without having to watch America’s Team run out of luck. Also, you can get bottles of champagne and sake at Glasslands. I did not know this.

The Señors of Marseille, was the first act we caught. They played a kind of skippy slapstick indie rock. There was a relationship song where he was a daisey cutter and she was a bunkerbuster. It was cute, which is a good summating of the band, really. Pop songs like candyfloss, sweet and sticky. The band had great stage presence and banter and gave away CDs to everyone. Get one if you can.

EULA. WE LOVE EULA. They do fast as hell structuralist post punk that’s so fast it’s almost back into the “punk” camp. Each time you see them it may be a new experience as they continue to tweak old songs and introduce some of their newer tracks. The best way to call it is a “tender thrashing” as the guitar’s tone mocks you and savages you while the bass and drums take turns kicking your kidneys to pulpy messes. EULA is great stuff and it’s wonderful to see them playing more shows. They’re playing Bruar Falls TUESDAY. You should go.

After this we decided to get some lunch. Our plans to catch the Spike Hill show were thrwarted by the Soccer game, so we were kind of at a loss. We checked the schedule and ducked into Public Assembly to catch Italians Do It Live, a three band Italian indie rock showcase. We had no expectations and as such what we caught was just amazing to behold.

Le-Li is a two piece with Leli the female guitarist / vocalist with John on drum kit, banjo, diamonica and additional percussion. It was very, very, very twee, but still quite enjoyable. They performed original compositions and a large number of cover songs, giving low key summer time covers of Nirvana, Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols and The Moldy Peaches. Aside from The Moldy Peaches, all of the songs were in a kind of halting English. It’s a bit like watching 120 Minutes in a world populated by kittens and yarn.

Serpenti was pop industrial. Like remember the 90s when dudebros knew who NIN and Ministry were? Imagine if that continued and instead of getting nu metal we got strong industrial metal as our pop music instead. That’s what Serpenti was like. Songs predominately in Italian all with strong, aggressive beats, live bass and effects. It was a hell of a lot of fun and I think it would have gone down a lot better if it were showcased as part of night time dance party instead of a matinee dance party.

Posi is a small girl who was dressed like Desperately Seaking Susan era Madonna rapping in italian over glitched the hell out beats. Her frustration was very obvious because of the ten people in the audience besides myself the only other person moving was the bartender as she filled drink orders. I had no idea what Posi was saying but it was said in an absolutely awesome way. I think this too would have done a LOT better as a dance party.

All three acts are playing as I type this at House of Yes and I just hope that they’ve gotten more people to attend as all three acts were quite good and I think that in a better environment, if they’d connected with an appreciative audience, they would have gone down quite well.
